Safety Tips for Playing Airsoft Sports
The sport of Airsoft, like paintball, tends to be taken very seriously. It is used for battle simulations, target shooting and even military training. Because these guns use plastic BBs rather than metal ones, it is generally considered a safe sport to play with all ages. Here are some safety tips to ensure that your experience with these guns is a pleasant one.
To begin, you absolutely must wear protective eyewear whenever you are handling a gun, be it a BB gun or a paint gun. Be sure these guards are shatter-resistant, and that they can handle the velocity speeds of your gun. Protective clothing such as padded shirts, pants, helmets and masks can also help keep you safe. The most important tip to remember when handling an Airsoft gun is to shoot from a distance. These guns should be handled by mature children or adults who can understand the level of risk involved in using these guns. All players should be taught proper handling of such a device. While the plastic pellets are not as dangerous as metal BBs (they cannot actually penetrate the skin in most instances) there is still some risk of injury when fired at close range.
Blindness is the number one risk to keep in mind when handling these guns, and wearing safety goggles reduces this risk. Even when you are just practicing by shooting targets, eyewear should be worn in case of ricochets. Another big risk is having your mostly harmless Softair gun mistaken for the real thing. You don’t want to take your gun anywhere where you may alarm other people, and possibly the authorities, who may end up arresting you for causing a panic, or worse even, using deadly force against you! It is important to keep the orange tip on the end, as this helps to ensure your safety.
Before allowing a younger child to use his/her own Airsoft gun, be sure to teach the consequences of injury. Explain the risks and make sure he/she knows how to operate it. For example, shooting someone who is not in a game with you could be considered a serious offense, and jail time or a lawsuit could happen if there was serious injury. Younger ones should also be advised that shooting the family pets is not ok. The last thing you need is a monstrous vet bill and Fido to come home with one eye!
With a few simple precautions, owning and using an Airsoft gun can be a lot of fun an excellent group activity. |
