The internet has become a vital service in our everyday lives. It is used for everything from searching for a job to cooking dinner. People use the internet to connect with family and friends, run their businesses, and for general entertainment. The internet is no longer just on computers, but is on cell phones, tablets, MP3 players, etc. It is used from the car, the grocery store, home, and work, anywhere there is a signal. The Internet is quickly becoming something that people cannot live without, and to that end below are four free internet options.

  • Dial-up Internet Providers - Most people know about companies that provide free dial-up internet services. The downsides to these services are a phone line and phone service is needed, there are scrolling advertisements, and the stream speed is somewhat slower than a DSL or broadband internet service. The upside is as long as the phone bill is paid, there is internet service at no additional charge. A modem is needed for this option.
  • Free WiFi Hotspots - Many restaurants, coffee shops, libraries, and bookstores are now offering free WiFi to their customers as a way to bring in more business. This option is not feasible for a traditional desktop computer, but is a very good option for laptop users, iPad users, or other portable internet connectable devices. There are several websites that provide lists of WiFi hotspots in order to locate local WiFi providers.
  • Public Internet stations – Several businesses, public offices and libraries have computer labs or public internet stations setup to provide the public with access to the Internet. Local community colleges, unemployment centers and other training facilities often have computers available for the public as well. Try contacting these locations in your area and ask if they offer free internet to the public.
  • Low Income Internet Assistance - In recent news interviews, the topic of providing internet to lower income students has been discussed. Some internet provider companies are offering free internet services to students who can provide proof that they are currently on the free or reduced lunch programs. Not all companies are participating in the program. To find out who is offering this program contact local telecom and internet providers.

The internet is a crucial source of information and form of interpersonal communication. It is a vital part of the world we live in, but that does not mean it has to drain the budget. With research it is possible to find a cost-effective internet source to fit any budget.
